The purpose of embedding fundamental British values in UK schools is to prepare children for life in modern Britain, foster social cohesion, and protect young people from extremist influences.
At London Meed, we weave British Values through our ethos, curriculum, through our work on protected characteristics and through assemblies. Our school reflects British values in all that we do. We aim to nurture our children on their journey through life so they can grow into safe, caring, democratic, responsible and tolerant adults who make a positive difference to British society and to the world. We encourage our children to be creative, unique, open-minded and independent individuals, respectful of themselves and of others in our school, our local community and the wider world. Wherever possible, we take a global approach to learning by introducing themes from the perspective of other people in other countries.
The Five Core British Values
- Democracy: We empower our pupils to have a voice. Through our Junior Governors, Anti-Bullying Ambassadors, Eco Warriors, class voting, and pupil surveys, children learn how to listen to others, share opinions, and make collective decisions.
- The Rule of Law: We teach children to understand right from wrong, respect school and classroom rules, and recognise that laws protect us. Visits from local police and fire services help reinforce these lessons. We use our three rules of Ready, Respectful, Safe' to help children understand this.
- Individual Liberty: We provide a safe, supportive environment where children are encouraged to build self-confidence, make independent choices, and express themselves safely through Life Skills, PSHE and enrichment activities.
- Mutual Respect: Our school community is built on kindness and respect. Children learn how their actions impact others, value good sportsmanship, and celebrate what makes everyone unique.
- Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs: Through Religious Education (RE), storytelling, and learning about diverse cultural festivals, we nurture open-mindedness and curiosity about the wider world.
